Review of Aseneskak Casino, Owned and Operated by Six First Nations

Review of Aseneskak Casino

This little casino is situated among the trees that surround Opaskwayak Cree Nation, and is only minutes away from the Saskatchewan River, Manitoba. It is about five minutes drive north of the town of The Pas in the community of Opaskwayak. The casino has a warm ambience and beautiful First Nations decor. It also has a great restaurant, and excellent gaming facilities.

The Aseneskak Casino is owned by a partnership of six First Nations, Chemawawin Cree Nation, Misipawistik Cree Nation, Mosakahiken Cree Nation, Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation and Sapotaweyak Cree Nation. All the First Nations benefit from the proceeds of the casino.

The Current Site Has a Historical Record

The current town site of Opaskwayak was a historical gathering place where people came to receive spiritual healing. All the Cree in the area would meet here every summer to fish, cultivate the land and gather the harvest. It was a time for enjoying social cultural activities and connecting with interrelated families and practising the ceremonial way of life known as the Metewiwin or Grand Medicine Society. The language spoken by the Opaskwayak people is from the Swampy Cree N dialect. There were some other local bands who shared the same territory, and who also met for the same reasons. The local hotel known as the Kikiwak Inn was built in 1996. The Otineka shopping mall was built in the early 1970s. There are two churches on the reserve. According to the old family traditions Cree people have occupied north central Manitoba for centuries, and archaeology supports this claim. The earliest archaeological evidence of the people has been dated as between two thousand and four thousand years ago. The area can be reached by rail, road, water or air travel.
